Family History

Edward Marriot was born in 1886 at Pleasley he was the son of Walter a coal miner hewer and Agnes Marriott née Hollingsworth of 26 Big Barn Lane, Mansfield. Walter was born in 1867 at Wessington, Derbyshire Agnes Hollingworth was born in 1869 at The Riddings, Derbyshire, they were married 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district, they went on to have 9 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his parents and siblings are living at 26 Big Barn Lane, Mansfield, Walter 44 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Agnes 42 yrs and five of their children. . Edward married Elizabeth Ann Evans (born 28th September 1879) on 17th March 1906 at the Primitive Methodist Church, Mansfield they had a daughter Emily born 3rd September 1906 they lived at 12 Bagshaw Street Pleasley Hill Mansfield. In 1911 the family were living at 12 Bagshaw Street, Pleasley Hill, Edward is 24 yrs and is a coal miner he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 31 yrs and their daughter Emily 4 yrs of age. Commencing 4th February 1918 his wiodw was awarded a pension of 20 shillings a week.

Military History

Bombardier Edward Marriott served with the 188th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery he enlisted on 20th January 1915 aged 28 years and 157 days his next of kin was his wife. He arrived at the Royal Garrison Artillery depot in Glasgow on 21st January 1915. He embarked from Southampton on 17th May 1916 landing the following day at Le Harve. He died of wounds on 29th July 1917 accidentally received, gunshot wound to pelvis and arms and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military cemetery Grave Reference: XVI K 8A

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser, 16/08/1917: Pleasley Soldier Dies of Wounds. Photograph printed. On 31/07/1917 news had been received that Bombardier Edward Marriott had been severely wounded. A letter had been received to say he had died of his wounds on 29/07/1917.Wounded on 26/07/1917 by a fuse he was repairing. Taken to hospital but died of his wounds at 9pm on the 29th July. Letters in the report.
