Salathiel Reed was born in 1898 the son of Elijah a coal miner and Ruth Reed (née Kirk). Both his parents were born in 1858 at Nottingham. Married in 1877 in the Basford Registration District, they had thirteen children. Salathiel’s ten siblings to survive infancy were Isaiah b.1878, John William b.1880, Clara b.1885, Ernest b.1887, Sarah b.1890, Elijah b.1893, Annie b.1895, Ruth b.1896, Robert b.1899 and Mary Hannah b.1903. In 1891 they lived at 5 Bell’s Cottages Basford, in 1901 at 46 Napoleon Square Cinderhill and in 1911 at 125 Bulwell Lane Basford.
32nd Division Signal Coy Salathiel Reed enlisted in Nottingham and previously served as a gunner with 168th Brigade H.Q. Royal Field Artillery.
He is buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery Grave reference: II A 3 In memoriam published 28th July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War :- “REED. – Salathiel, beloved son of Ruth and Eliza Reed, Bulwell-lane, Basford, killed in France July 27th, 1917.
