Job Samples

Job was the son of Job and Annie Samples nee French. His father Job was the son of Henry and Sarah Samples and born in 1876 (A/M/J Nottingham) and baptised on 30 July 1876 at St Luke, Sneinton. His parents lived at Victoria Place, Sneinton. His mother Annie was the daughter of Thomas and Annie French who was born on 3 December 1878 (1879 J/F/M Nottingham) and baptised on 12 February 1879 at St Mark, Nottingham. Her parents lived at 3 Salisbury Court. Job and Annie were married on 26 October 1896 (O/N/D Nottingham) at St Stephen, Sneinton, and they had two children: Emma Elizabeth birth registered 1897 (J/F/M Nottingham) bap. 4 April 1897 St Catherine Nottingham, and Job birth registered 1899 (J/F/M Nottingham). Job and Annie were living on Keswick Street, Sneinton, when Emma was baptised in 1897 but in 1901 they were living at 4 Fields Yard, Hermit Street, Nottingham, with their two children Emma (4) and Job (2). Job snr. (25), was working as a glue finisher. Another daughter, Clara, was born in 1902 (A/M/J Nottingham). Emma Elizabeth died in 1909 (J/F/M Nottingham) age 11. By 1911 Annie (32), a cardboard box maker (fancy lace), was living at Saffron Yard, Albert Street, Nottingham, as a boarder in the home of Thomas Spencer (42), single, a general labourer with the borough council. The census recorded that Annie had been married for 14 years and had had six children of whom only three were still living: Job, Clara and Lilian (Lilian Spencer Samples, birth registered 1909 (A/M/J Nottingham). Two of the children were in the house on the night of the census - Job (12) and Lily (2) - but Clara was a visitor at 15 Cur Lane, Beck Street, Nottingham, the home of Frank and Annie Hayes. Another child, Edward S Samples, was born in 1912 (J/F/M Nottingham, French), probably on 5 February (Edward Spencer Samples b. 5 February 1912 d.1971 J/F/M Halifax). Annie married Thomas S Whittaker (probably Thomas Spencer) in 1914 (J/A/S Nottingham). No record has yet been traced of the death of her husband, Job Samples, but a notice in the local paper on the death of his brother Henry in June 1918 names Henry's siblings including 'brother Job missing'. Annie and Thomas had two children after their marriage, Louisa, b. 11 September 1915 (J/A/S Nottingham, French) and Albert b. 1920 (O/N/D Nottingham, French). A report of Job's death in the local paper in 1916 gave his address as 47 Brassey Street, Radford. The CWGC record gives Annie's address as 3 Hatley Terrace, Castleton Street, Nottingham. However, by 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register, Thomas Whittaker (b. 30 September 1866), 'retired', and Annie, a cardboard box maker, were living at 130 Wilford Grove, Meadows. Also in the household were their daughter Louisa, whose occupation was given as unpaid domestic duties, and Elizabeth Stockdale (b. June 1874) single and working as a roll ironer. Thomas Whittaker died aged 79 in 1944 (J/F/M Nottingham) and Annie probably died in 1977 (J/F/M Nottingham) aged 98.
