William Henry Ecob was born in 1895 the son of George an agricultural labourer and Amelia Ecob (née Smith). His father was born in 1861 at Upper Broughton Nottinghamshire, his mother in 1861 in Old Dalby Leicestershire.They were married in 1893 in the Melton Mowbray district. Amelia had previously been married to John Tipp (died 1891 aged 35) a bricklayers labourer. They had three children. In 1911 the family lived at Debdale Hill Old Dalby. George was a farm labourer and Amelia worked as a mess room caretaker. By 1915 the family had moved to Holme Cottages Holme Grange Holme Pierrepont Nottinghamshire. They later moved to 25 Quernaby Road Coppice Road Mapperley Nottingham.
William Henry Ecob attested 10th December 1915 at Nottingham and was placed into the reserves the following day. He was mobilised 1st February 1916 and posted to the 2/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France 26th February 1917 and was posted to the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was wounded (gunshot wound to the shoulder 17th March 1917) and admitted to the 5th Casualty Clearing Station and eventually transferred to the Station Hospital in Rouen on 21st March. 30th April 1917 he was discharged and returned to his unit. In Memoriam published 6th March 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ECOB. – Pte. W. H.
