John Thomas Phillips was born in 1895 the son of the late James a limestone quarryman and Ellen Phillips née Finney and the brother of Alice, James William and Harry Phillips of 22 New Street, Kirkby in Ashfield. James was born in 1868 at Cotton, Staffordshire he died in 1907 aged 40 yrs, Ellen Finney was born in 1870 at Cauldon Lowe, Staffordshire, married in 1891 at Cheadle, Staffordshire, they had 6 children, 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 4 Diamond Avenue Kirkby in Ashfield.

Military History

Private John Thomas Phillips enlisted at Mansfield, he died of wounds on 8th September 1916 and is buried at Contay British Cemetery, Contay, France.
