Family History

John Charles Groom was born in 1890 at West Deeping in Lincolnshire he was baptised on 25th January 1891 at West Deeping, he was the son of Thomas a blacksmith and Sarah Ann Groom, née Groom. Thomas was born in 1858 at Polebrook, Northamptonshire, Sarah Ann Groom was born in 1862 at West Deeping they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Huntingdon Registration district, they had 9 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1891 the family were living at No 15 Kings Street, West Deeping, where Thomas was a blacksmith. By 1908 the family had moved to Stoke Bardolph in Nottinghamshire where Thomas, still a blacksmith, was working on the sewage farms at Stoke Bardolph. In 1911 the family were still living at Stoke Bardolph, Thomas 53 yrs is a farm blacksmith he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 49 yrs and 4 of their children including John 20 yrs a farm labourer.

Military History

Rifleman John Charles Groom enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion King’s Royal Rifles. He landed in France on 22 July 1915 and was killed in action on 18th March 1916. He is buried at Essex Farm Cemetery, Belgium. He was eligible for the 1915 star, the Victory and British medals.
