Family History

Charles Allen was born in 1887 at Leicester and was the son of William a fell monger and his second wife Mary Bateman. His father William was born in 1843 at Wirksworth and his mother Mary Bateman was born in 1849 at Wirksworth, they were married on 30th June 1873 at Wirksworth. Charles married his wife Lily Ethel Sharpe (born 4th December 1885 in Leicester) in 1909 in Nottingham, they lived at 232 Gladstone Street, Nottingham and have a son John Charles Peter born 22nd March 1910. In the 1911 census the family are living at 16 Hollis Street, Nottingham and are shown as Charles 24 yrs a window cleaner he is living with his wife Lily 25 yrs and their son John 1 year of age. Following his death his widow Lily Ethel was awarded a pension of 22 shilings and 11 pence a week which commenced on 24th February 1919

Military History

Sergeant Charles Allen, enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 10th (Prince of Wales' Own Royal) Hussars, He landed in France on 18th May 1915 and was killed in action on 9th August 1918. He is buried in Caix British Cemetery.10th Prince of Wales's Hussars
