Ernest was born in 1892 in Nottingham and was the eldest son of William a lace manufacturer and Clara Morley née Cheetham of 440 Woodborough Road, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1865 in Nottingham and his mother Clara Cheetham was born in 1870 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1890 in Nottingham and had two further children, Nelly b1895 Nottingham and William b1900 also in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family were living at 440 Woodborough Road Nottingham and were shown as William 46 yrs a lace manufacturer, he is living with his wife Clara 41 yrs and their 3 children , Ernest 18 yrs a lace manager, Nelly 16 yrs a milliner and William 11 yrs a scholar, also living with them is Susan Neal 17 yrs from Bulwell a domestic servant. Ernest married Gertrude Hollis in 1912 in Nottingham and they went on to have two children Mabel born 1912 and Stewart Morley born 1913 , both were born in Nottingham and lived at 64 Dame Agnes Street, St. Ann's, Nottingham.
Corporal Ernest Morley, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/1st South Nottinghamshire Hussars. He landed in Egypt on 26th April 1915 and he died of wounds on 4th January 1917 in Egypt and is buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria.
Death notices published 19th January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MORLEY. – Died of wounds in the field, on the 4th inst., Corporal Ernest Morley, Yeomanry, the beloved husband of Gertrude Morley, 24, Rockwood-road, aged 24. – From loving wife and children. “MORLEY. – Killed in action, on January 4th, 1917, Corpl. Ernest Morley, Yeomanry, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W.
