Frederick Wilson

Frederick was the son of William Horace Wilson and Georgiana Wilson nee Hallott. William was born in Nottingham in 1863 (O/N/D Nottingham) and Georgiana was also born in Nottingham. They were married in 1885 (marriage registered A/M/J Nottingham). According to the 1911 Census when they had been married for 25 years, they had had seven children of whom six had survived. Six children were named on the census between 1891 and 1911: Horace Harold (b. 1886, A/M/J Nottingham), Percy William (b. 1888, O/N/D Nottingham), Annie (b. abt 1892, Nottingham), Frederick (b. abt 1894, Birmingham), Thomas Arthur/Arthur Thomas (b. 26 April 1896, Birmingham) and Olive Adelaide (b. 1900, J/A/S Aston Warwickshire). In 1891 William (28), an assurance agent, and Georgiana (24) were living at 6 Elland Street, Basford, with their two sons, Horace (4) and Percy (2). Also in the household on the night of the census were two visitors, Laura Thurman (27) and her son Albert (10 months). By 1901 William and Georgiana were living at 11 Mona Place, Angelina Street, Aston, Birmingham where William was working as a cabinet furniture fitter. They now had six children, Horace (14) an electrical engineer, Percy (12), Annie E (9), Frederick (7), Thomas A. (4) and Olive Adelaide (8 months). William and Georgiana were back in Nottingham by 1911 and living at 2 Ashover Terrace, Manning Street. William was now employed by the Municipal Water Department repairing fire hydrants. Only four of their children were still living at home; Annie (19) a frame hand Swiss lace, Frederick (17) who was a porter for a wholesale chemist, Arthur (14) a hairdresser's assistant and Olive (10) who was still at school. William's two eldest sons, Horace and Percy, may have remained in Birmingham when their parents moved back to Nottingham as by 1911 both were married and living in Birmingham. Horace married Annie Louisa Newbold in 1907 (marriage registered J/A/S King's Norton, Warwickshire) and in 1911 they were living at 21 Hampden Street, Balsall Heath, Birmingham. Horace (25), a carter, and Annie (25) had one child, Ivy Edna (3). Percy married Daisy Elizabeth Wicketts on 23 May 1909 (marriage registered Deritend St Gabriel, Birmingham). In 1911 Percy (22), a brass turner, and Daisy (22) were living at 1 William Edward Street, Birmingham, with their one year-old son, William Percy. Percy and Daisy had three more children, a son and two daughters, who were listed in Percy's service documents although their names are indistinct: William (b. 3 June 1909), a child born in January 1912, a third child born on 17 February 1914 and Rose b. 4 June 1917. Rose died in infancy as the army record of his widow's claim for a pension lists three children, two male, one female, the eldest of whom was born 1909 and the youngest in 1914. Frederick was married to Elizabeth Beal in 1913 (marriage registered J/A/S Nottingham). They lived at Loughborough Terrace, Ryland Crescent, Nottingham and had a son, Frederick Wilson. Elizabeth later remarried (Farquhar) and lived at 33 Portland Street, Lincoln. Frederick's mother, Georgiana, died in 1914 (death registered A/M/J Nottingham). Frederick's older brothers, Horace and Percy, also died in the war. Horace enlisted in Birmingham and served in the 2nd Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment (8959 Private). He was killed in action on 19 October 1914, aged 28 (Ypres Menin Gate Memorial). He and Annie had several children as the Registers of Soldiers' Effects refers to payments for his wife and children. Percy also enlisted in Birmingham and served in the Army Service Corps (M/280356). His service record survives: he attested on 7 September 1914 when he was living at 1 Back 48 Cheapside, Birmingham, although they later lived at 7 Back, 118 Cheapside. Following 21 days leave in the UK he embarked Southampton on 13 April 1918 for Salonica (via Cherbourg and Taranto). He died in hospital in Salonica on 28 October 1918 of pneumonia contracted 'as a result of active service' (Skopje British Cemetery). Army records show that after her husband's death Daisy Wilson gave her address as 2 Ashover Terrace, Manning Street, Nottingham, the address of Percy's widowed father. According to the CWGC record for Horace Harold, his father, William, lived at 2 Askerne Terrace, Mannigry Street, Nottingham, which may be a corruption of '2 Ashover Terrace, Manning Street', as the CWGC record for Frederick gives his father's address as 2 Ashover Terrace, Manning Street. (The latter record gives his father's name as 'Horace'.) Of Frederick's surviving siblings: Annie has not yet been traced after 1911. Arthur died aged 79 in 1976 (death registered March Nottingham). Olive Adelaide appears to have married three times; in 1920 to Rowland A Shepherd (marriage registered A/M/J Reading Berkshire), in 1943 to Frederick Hill (marriage registered O/N/D Nottingham, 'Olive A Shepherd or Wilson'), and in 1970 to Leonard Saunders (marriage registered June, Nottingham). Olive Adelaide Saunders, born 23 July 1900, died in 1985 (death registered August Nottingham). Their father, William Horace, may have died in 1929 (death registered March Nottingham).
