Family History

Allen was born in 1883 the eldest son of Allen Leonardi a plasterer and Elizabeth Ann Leonardi (née) Booth who were both born at Nottingham in 1863. They married at Nottingham in 1882 had had nine children who were Allen b.1883 Grimsby, Florence b.1884 Nottingham, Emily b.1886 Grimsby, Lewis b.1888 Grimsby, Ernest b.1890 Grimsby (killed in action 28/11/1915), Albert b.1891 Goole, Louisa b.1900 Nottingham, Hettie b.1905 Nottingham and Frank b.1906 Nottingham. In 1911 the family lived at 55 Liddington Street Nottingham although Allen had by then left home. Allen married Margaret Mawdsley, a spinster, at the Registry Office at West Derby Liverpool on 13th February 1915. His wife brought two of her children to the marriage, Mary Joseph Mawdsley born 27th July 1905 and James Mawdsley born 14th January 1912. They lived at Staggs Hill Formby Liverpool. At the time of Allen’s death Margaret was living at Tyler Cottages Cheapside Formby Liverpool.

Military History

Allen Leonardi attested on 7th November 1914 at Shepherds Bushgiving his age as 31 years and 321 days, his occupation as labourer and his address as Rowton House Hammersmith, London. He gave his next of kin as (his brother) Lewis Leonardi Pte 9022 The King’s (Liverpool Regiment ). He stated he had previously served in the Army (service number 9224) with the 8th Battalion The King’s (Liverpool Regiment ). He had served for 2 years and 180 days between 1903 and 1905 but had been discharged on medical grounds. He was posted to the 3rd Battalion King’s (Liverpool Regiment on 11th November 1914 landing in France on 1st May 1915. On 21st May 1915 he was posted to the 4th Battalion. He died of wounds at 8th base field ambulance having served for 1 year 285 days.
