Ernest Reeve was born in 1894 the son of Harry a publican (born Clay Cross Derbyshire 1871) and Elizabeth Reeve (née Dale born Nottingham 1871). They married at Nottingham in 1890 and had six other children who were all born in Nottingham - Harry born 1891 George born 1893, Lottie born 1896, Elizabeth born 1897 William born 1901 and Florence born 1908. On the 1901 census Harry (30), a painter, was living with his wife and family at 45 Turner Street St Ann's Nottingham. By 1911 Harry had become a publican and the family was living at the Chase Tavern 140 St Ann's Well Road Nottingham. Harry’s wife Elizabeth assisted with the business, George (18) was a hair dresser, Ernest (17) worked in the hosiery business, Lottie (15) was a machinist, Elizabeth (14) was a lace errand girl and Florence was 3 years old. Harry was later a publican at the Rose and Crown Inn at Cotgrave and the Red Lion at Radcliffe on Trent.
Ernest Reeve enlisted on 5th November 1914 in Nottingham, giving his age as 20 years and 207 days and his occupation as factory worker. He was posted to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps depot at Winchester on 10th November 1914. He went out to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on 3rd August 1915 and served until he was wounded by a gunshot wound to the hip on 12th January 1916. He was returned to England for treatment on 17th January 1916 where he remained until 20th June 1916 when he returned to the Western Front. He was reported wounded and missing on 5th November 1916 during an attack on the Boritska and Hazy trenches and was later confirmed as killed in action on that date.

A bitter blow, a shock severe, to part with one we all loved so dear. He nobly did his duty. - From his sorrowing mother, father, sisters, and brothers.' 'REEVE. - Wounded and missing, November 5th, 1916, now reported killed, Rifleman E. Reeve, K.R.R.C. We never knew what pain he had, we never saw him die, we only know he passed away without a last good-bye. - From his sorrowing brother and wife, George and Alice.'
