George was the son of George Henry Maddock and Frances Maddock. George married his first wife, Frances Humphreys, in 1877 (A/M/J, Nottingham). In 1881 George (27), a house decorator, and Frances (22) were living at 10 Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham, with their first child, Ethel Gertrude (b. 1880). They later had two sons, William Hy (b. 1882) and George Henry (b. 1885). Frances died in 1887 (J/A/S) at the age of 28 and George married Mary Berrisford the following year in 1888. In 1891 George (37) and Mary were living at 24 Gladstone Street, Nottingham. Also in the home on the night of the census were George's three children by his first wife, Ethel (11), William (8) and George Henry (5). Ethel married Thomas Joseph Riley in 1898 and in 1901 they were living in Derby with their two children Thomas Joseph (1) and Agnes (4 months); they had at least one more child, Isabella (b. abt. 1910) By 1901 George (47), was a house painter on his own account. He and Mary were living at 78 Woodborough Road, Nottingham, with William (18) a house painter, and George (15) an errand boy, and their son Albert (8, b. 1892). The census shows a discrepancy in Mary's age; on the 1891 Census her age was given as 28 years (b. Westwood, Notts) - there is a record of the registration of the birth of Mary Berrisford in 1865 (J/A/S), Basford registration district - but on the 1901 Census her age is given as 45 (b. Nottingham). Although her name has been transcribed on the 1891 Census as 'Mary' the name on the original document is hardly legible. Note: no other marriages for George Henry Maddock have been traced between 1891 and 1901. George was later widowed (no record yet found of Mary's death) and in 1906 (O/N/D) he married Elizabeth Rose (nee Tyler). Elizabeth was born in Exton, Rutland, the daughter of Richard and Sarah Tyler, and was baptised in Exton on 21 November 1858. She married Thomas Richard Rose in 1879 and in 1901 was living at Ashwell, Rutland with her husband Thomas (56) and their five children, William Herbert (20), Arthur (12), Edith (10), Annie (6) and Minnie (Sarah Minnie, 4). George's eldest son, William, married Mabel Cheetham in 1906 (A/M/J) and in 1911 they and their four-year old son, Frank William, were living with Mabel's widowed mother at 33 Skynner street, Mansfield Road. George Henry married Louisa Cowpertwait in 1908 (J/A/S, registered Nottingham). By the time of the 1911 Census he and Louisa (27) were living at 1 Orby Terace, Woodhouse Street, Nottingham and had one child, Charles Henry (b. 1910, J/F/M), although another child had died in infancy. They subsequently had at least two more children, Bertha (b. 1911, J/A/S)) and Louisa (b. 1912, J/A/S). In 1911 his father was living at 78 Woodborough Road, Nottingham, with his third wife, Elizabeth, his youngest son Albert (18) a plumber, and his step-daughter, Sarah Minnie (14) a lace hand. At the time Albert enlisted in 1915 they were living at 92 Woodborough Road but later lived at 42 Sherwin Street, Nottingham. George's half-brother, Albert, served in the Royal Engineers 218th Field Company (145438 Sapper) from February 1916 and died on 22 February 1919 of broncho-pneumonia (buried Cologne Southern Cemetery). He was unmarried but named Miss Alice Maud Marshall of 9 Woodville Road, Sherwood, Nottingham, as his legatee. George's father died on 5 October 1922 and his step-mother on 26 June 1943 aged 86.
He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (panel ref. Pier and Face 10C 10D and 11A).
