Edward was the son of Henry a blacksmith and Mary Ann Wheatley née Peters. He was baptised on 17th September 1882 at St Edmunds Church Holme Pierrepoint. His father was born in 1842 in Holme Pierrepoint and his mother Mary Ann Peters was born in 1848 in Bassingfield. They were married in 1870 in the Bingham Registration district in 1870. They had the following children : - Ellen b1872, Ratcliffe, Frederick b1874 Ratcliffe, Thomas b1876 Ratcliffe , Emma b1878 Bassingfield, Albert b1881 Bassingfield, Edward b1882 Bassingfield, Alice b1885 Bassingfield and Ethel b1887 Bassingfield. In 1891 the family lived on Holme Lane Holme Pierrepont. In 1901 Edward was boarding at Warp Mill, Linby, Nottinghamshire, living with Ralph Mills, 75, Sarah Mills, 71, Lucy Morley, their granddaughter age 13 and another boarder William Whitehead. In 1911 Edward was living at Serlby Hall Bawtry Nottinghamshire the home of George Viscount Galway (Peer of the realm ). His father Henry, a 69 year old widower, still lived at Holme Pierrepont with his daughter/housekeeper Ethel. He married his wife Ada Elizabeth King, of Osgathorpe, Loughborough, Leicestershire in 1915 in Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire
Edward enlisted in London; he gave his residence as Loughborough. He served with the 619th Mechanical Transport Company of the Army Service Corps. He died of typhoid fever at the 26th General Hospital at Salonica, Greece, on 22nd September 1916 and is buried in Salonica (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.
