Family History

William known as Billie to his family and friends was born in 1892 in Coventry and was baptised on 2nd October 1892 at St John the Baptised Church, Coventry he was the son of Henry a tool room foreman in the lace manufacturing industry and Sarah Jane Montgomery née Wormell of 1 Sophie Road Nottingham. The family originated in Coventry, Warwickshire his father Henry was born in 1858 in the town and his mother Sarah Jane was born in 1861 also in the town , they married in 1882 in Coventry and went on to have 5 children all of whom were born in the town, they were:- Ethel b1883, Margaret b1886, Henry John b1889, Dorothy b1890 and William James b1892. The family lived in Coventry and were still in the town in the 1891 census , however by the next census in 1901 the entire family had relocated to Nottingham and were shown living at 41 Maples Street, Hyson Green. By the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Sophie Road, and are shown as :- head of the family Henry 53 yrs a tool room foreman who is living with his wife Sarah Jane 50 yrs and their children Margaret 25 yrs a typist , Henry John 22 yrs a lace draughtsman, Dorothy 21 yrs a typist and William James 19 yrs a warehouseman.

Military History

Sergeant William (Billie) James Montgomery, enlisted in Nottingham and served with “C” Squadron, 1/1st South Notts. Hussars, he was killed in action on 12th September 1915 whilst in Gallipoli. He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Suvla.

Extra Information

Following is an entry from the Nottingham Evening Post dated 12th September 1916 : - “MONTGOMERY. – In loving memory of Billie, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Montgomery, Nottingham, sergeant South Notts. Hussars, killed in action at Suvla Bay, September 12th, 1915.” His older brother, Pte. Henry (Harry) John Montgomery, also serving with the 1/1st South Nottinghamshire Hussars at Suvla, had received disabling wounds in the left hand and thigh on 29th August 1915 while digging a communication trench. Evacuated from the peninsula, his wounds led to his discharge from the army on 22nd April 1916. They were the sons of Sarah Jane and Henry Montgomery, of 1 Sophie Road, Nottingham.
