He was the son of Charles Albert and Ann Greening. Joseph married his wife Alice Elizabeth Flook (born 1st July 1884 Nottingham) in 1909 in Nottingham, they lived at 21 Allport Street, Waterway Street, Meadows, Nottingham, they went on to have a daughter Elsie Elizabeth born 16th February 1910 In 1911, they lived at 3, Crown Park Terrace Lane, Basford, Nottingham and were shown as Joseph Greening 25 yrs a sidings porter, he is living with his wife Alice Elizabeth 26 yrs and their daughter Elsie Elizabeth 1 year of age.
Rifleman Joseph Greening enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 7th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 25th August 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Death notice published 7th September 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GREENING. – Killed in action, August 25th, 1916, Rifleman Joe Greening, K.R.R., the beloved husband of Alice Greening, aged 30 years. He bravely answered duty's call, he gave his life for one and all; the unknown grave is the bitterest blow, none but aching hearts can know. – From his broken-hearted wife and little daughter Elsie. “GREENING. – Killed in action, August 25th, 1916, Rifleman J. Greening, K.R.R. They miss him most who loved him best. His heart was good, his spirit brave, his resting-place a soldier's grave. – From his sorrowing sisters Alice and Emma, brothers-in-law Joe and Albert. “GREENING. – Killed in action, August 25th, Rifleman Joe Greening, the dearly-loved son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Flook. – From sorrowing father, mother, sister and brother-in-law, Winnie and Bert (wounded). In memoriam published 25th August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GREENING. – Killed in action, August 25th, 1916, Rifleman J. Greening, K.R.R. Give him eternal rest, O Lord. – From Rose and Alf (Salonika).” “GREENING. – In loving memory of my dear husband and dear dada, Rifleman J. Greening, K.R.R., who was killed in action August 25th, 1916. Oft we think of you in silence, how our hearts are filled with pain; Oh, this world would be a heaven could we hear your voice again. Sorrowing wife and little daughter, Elsie. “GREENING. – In loving memory of Rifleman J. Greening, who fell in action August 25th, 1916. Until the day breaks and the shadows flee.
