Thomas Stevenson was born in 1880 at Radford he was the son of Herbert a labourer and carter and Eliza Ann Stevenson née Brown Herbert was born in 1857 at Basford, he died in 1897 aged 40 yrs, Eliza Ann Brown was born in 1859 at Nottingham they were married in 1876 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had a further son George born in 1878. Thomas married Ada Ellen Bignall on 18th April 1908 at Radford Christ Church, Nottingham, they had a son Thomas born 25th February 1909, they lived at 102 Alfreton Road, Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 28 Chapel Street Alfreton Road Nottingham. Thomas is 30 yrs and a joiners labourer he is living with his wife Ada 28 yrs and their son Thomas 2 yrs of age. Commencing 23rd April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private Thomas Stevenson, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, landing in France on 18th March 1915 he was killed in action on 13th September 1916. [1] He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. 1] Many members of the battalion have their deaths recorded as 16th September 1916 by both the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and in “Soldiers Died in the Great War.” Thomas Stevenson is one of those men. However, his death is shown as taking place on 13th September 1916 here in these family notices and in the register of the disposal of his personal effects. The 2nd Battalion did go into action on the Somme on 13th September 1916 and came out of the line on 16th information courtesy of Jim Grundy.
Death notification published 24th October 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STEVENSON. – Killed in action, September 13th, 1916, Private Thomas Stevenson, Sherwood Foresters. A bitter blow, a shock severe, to part with one we loved so dear. – From his sorrowing wife and son. “STEVENSON. – Killed in action, September 13th, 1916, Private Thomas Stevenson, Sherwood Foresters.
