Family History

Arthur William Allen was born in 1897 in Nottingham and was the son of Ernest William a decorator and Annie Allen, née Shaw. His father Ernest William was born in 1870 in Nottingham and his mother Annie Shaw was born in 1873 also in Nottingham. They were married in 1891; the marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District. They went on to have five children all of whom were born in Nottingham: Mary b1892, Grace b1893, Arthur b1897, Gladys born 1898 and Hylton b1905. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Alberta Terrace, Nottingham and are shown as Ernest William 41 yrs a decorator who is living with his wife Annie 38 yrs and their children, Mary 19 yrs a blouse maker, Grace 18 yrs a blouse maker, Arthur 14 yrs an office boy, Gladys 13 yrs and Hylton 6 yrs. The family was still living at Alberta Terrace when Arthur was killed in 1916. His parents later lived at 46 Sandon Street, New Basford, Nottingham (CWGC).

Military History

Lance Corporal Arthur William Allen enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in France on 11th November 1914 and was killed in action the following year on 13th June 1915. He is buried in Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery (grave reference BI.18).
