John Slack was born in 1887 at Nottingham and was the only son of Frederick a grocer and Emma Bond Slack née Steer of 96 St Bartholomews Road, Thorneywood Rise, Nottingham. His father Frederick was born in 1868 at Nottingham and his mother Emma Bond Steer was born in 1869 also at Nottingham, they were married in 1887 at Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 96 St Bartholomews Road, Thorneywood Rise, Nottingham and were shown as Frederick 43 yrs a grocer, he is living with his wife Emma Bond 42 yrs and son John 24 yrs an assistant in his fathers business. John Slack married Lucy Annie Ryley (born 16th July 1887) in 1911 at Nottingham, they lived at 8 Edginton Terrace, Edgington Street, Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Margery Louisa born 10th January 1913 and Maisie Winifred born 3rd February 1914. Following his death his widow Lucy was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 18th November 1918.
Private John Slack, initially served with service number 3204 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) and was serving with the 6th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, when he died of wounds on 29th April 1918. He is buried in Esquelbecq Military
