Family History

George William Loach was born on on 12th December 1890 at Carlton, he was the son of the late Samuel a builder and Ann (Fanny) Loach née Coulton of 12 Beck Street, Carlton. His father was born in 1872 at Carlton, he died in 1911 aged 39 yrs his mother Ann Coulton was born in 1876 at Carlton, they were married on 15th June 1875 at Gedling parish church, they went on to have 13 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Station Road, Carlton, Samuel 39 yrs is a builder, he is living with his wife Fanny 35 yrs and their children, Samuel 10 yrs, George William 8 yrs, Frederick 5 yrs, John Lloyd 3 yrs and William Louis 1 year old. The family later lived on Hornbuckle Row Carlton.

Military History

Acting Bombadier George William Loach enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 52nd Bty 15th Bde Royal Field Artillery. He had previously served as a time expired Territorial with 8th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment). He attested on 8th August standing 5'6" tall and weighing 129lb he was 23 yrs and 269 days old. He was wounded (gun shot wounds to the back, right hand and right shoulder) 20/1/1916, returning to duty 19/2/1916. He was killed in action on 29th July 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
