Family History

George Herbert was born in Mansfield in 1894 and was the son of Joseph Gill born 1862 in Mansfield Woodhouse and his wife Sarah Ann Gill (née Newton) born 1861 in Mansfield Woodhouse. They married in 1889 in Mansfield and had three children. George’s siblings were Ethel Eliza born 1891 in Mansfield Woodhouse and Sarah Elizabeth born 1893 in Mansfield. In 1911 the family lived at 55 Woodhouse Road Mansfield. Joseph Gill aged 49 was a jam works foreman. Sarah Ann was 50. Ethel Eliza aged 20 was working as a wrapper in a jam factory and Sarah Elizabeth was employed in a laundry.

Military History

5th Bn According to the Silver War Badge Roll (Number B72921) George Herbert enlisted on 5th June 1915 and was discharged on 15th December 1918 due to wounds received on service overseas. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
