Brothers: James, born in 1873 in Nottingham, working as machine tool maker, Arthur, born in 1876, working as a dental surgeon and Albert, born 1895. Sisters: Agnes, born in 1881 in Nottingham, Ivy, born in 1885 in Nottingham and Sybil, born in 1898. Joseph Attenborough attended Mundella School.

Military History

Joseph Attenborough enlisted on 14/04/1909 and was discharged on 12/12/1911. He was placed on the Army Reserve and was called to the colours when war broke out. He was appointed sergeant on 01/10/1914 and was wounded in the neck and mouth on 28/10/1914 at Neuve Chapelle. Once recovered from his wounds he returned to the battalion, but during an attack in the Ypres Salient on 16/06/1915 at Bellewaarde Sgt. Attenborough was killed in action. His body was never recovered but his name was commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
