Lawrence Briggs Kellet was born on 25th September 1897 at Northfield, Worcestershire and was the son of James a public works contractor Annie Elizabeth Kellett née Jordan His father James was born in 1857 at Wyke, Yorkshire, his mother was born in 1861 at Stourbridge, Staffordshire, they were married in 1881 at Stourbridge and went on to have the following children, Caroline Annie b1882 Blakedown, Worcestershire, Sarah Ethel b 1883 Leicester, James Herbert b1887 Leicester, Winifred b1892 New Barnett Hertfordshire and Lawrence Briggs Kellett b1897 Northfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at Albyfield, Attenborough, Nottingham and are shown as James 54 yrs a public works contractor, he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 50 yrs and their children, Caroline Annie 29 yrs no occupation listed, Sarah Ethel 26 yrs no occupation listed, Winifred 19 yrs no occupation listed and Lawrence 13 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Lawrence Briggs Kellet enlisted on 21st September 1914 at Nottingham, he gave the false age of 19 yrs and 11 months (he was born 25th September 1897) his address was Albyfield, Attenborough, Nottingham, his next of kin was his father James of the same address. He stated he had seen previous service in the Officer Training Corps whilst at High School. He was posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters and landed in France on 28th February 1915. He was admitted on 17th July 1915 to the field ambulance with pyrexia and being transferred to the 50th casualty clearing station and on 23rd July 1915 to the 13 stationary hospital at Boulogne with influenza. He returned to his unit in the field on 10th August 1915. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 17th February 1916 he was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916 at Gommecourt. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His brother James Herbert Kellet also served during the Great War, he served with the 13th battalion Canadian Infantry, he died on 15th August 1917 aged 31 yrs.
