Son of Mrs. Kate Patchett, of 298, Carlton Hill, Carlton, Nottingham (CWGC) and grandson of Mahalah and John Sheppard of Gonalston (headstone). In the 1911 census the family are living at Gonalston and are shown as John 64 yrs a general labourer, he is living with is wife Mahalah 60 yrs and their children, Edith Lilian 25 yrs a dress maker, Charles John 16 yrs a grocers assistant and their grandson Wilfred 12 yrs a scholar. His mother Kate Sheppard married in 1903 to Herbert Patchett the marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district, they went on to have two children, Edward Victor b1905 and Herbert Clarence b1910 they lived at 53 Logan Street, Bulwell. In the 1911 census his mother is living at 53 Logan Street, Bulwell and is shown as Kate Patchet 34 yrs she is living with her husband Herbert 30 yrs a bricklayer and their children Edward Victor Patchett 6 yrs and Herbert Clarence Patchett 7 months of age.
Private Wilfred Sheppard enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Carlton, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
CWGC record and family headstone have first name as 'Wilfred' and parish memorial as 'Wilfred' Inscription on family headstone, St Laurence's churchyard, Gonalston: 'In loving memory of Wilfred, grandson of the above [Mahalah and John Sheppard], killed in action July 1st 1916, age 17½ years. Loving mother.'
