He was born in 1889 in Nottingham and was the son of the late Valentine a shoemaker and Mary Rose and the brother of Julia, Lizzie, Gertrude and Elsie Rose. In 1901 they lived at 5 Bleasby Street Trent Road Sneinton Nottingham. He married his wife Hilda Spurr (born 11th January 1889) in 1910 in Nottingham they lived at 3 Bleasby Street, Sneinton, they went on to have 2 children, Cyril George born 22nd June 1911 and Hilda Elsie born 6th December 1913. In 1911 they lived with Hilda's family at 94 St Stephen's Road Nottingham. Folowing his death his widow Hilda was awarded a pension of 25 shilings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 12th May 1919.
Pte. Walter Rose enlisted in Nottingham and served with service number 42115 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) then transferred to 2/7th Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment) he was reported missing, eventually confirmed killed in action on 11th September 1918. He is buried in Quarry Wood Cemetery, Sains-Les-Marquion.
Following is an entry from the Nottingham Evening Post newspaper dated 27th January 1919 :- “ROSE. - In memory of my dear husband, Pte. Walter Rose, 2/7th King's Liverpool Regt., reported missing Sept. 11th, 1918, now reported killed in action.
