Thomas Proctor Gardner (junior) was born in 1894 at Worksop, he was the son of Thomas Proctor Gardner (senior) and Mary Ellen Gardner née Key of 20 Holgate Road, Meadows, Nottingham. Thomas Proctor Gardner (senior) was born in 1873 at Worksop, Mary Ellen Key was born in 1875 at Sheffield, they were married on 4th September 1893 at St John’s Church, Worksop, they had 2 further children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their remaining surviving child was Rhoda born 1895 Worksop. In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Holgate Road, Meadows, Nottingham, Thomas Proctor (senior) 38 yrs is a wood sawyer, he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 36 yrs and their children Thomas Proctor (junior) 17 yrs an assistant cutter out in a leather warehouse.
Private Thomas Proctor enlisted at Nottingham on 5th March 1915, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed with his battalion in Gallipoli on 31st February 1915, he was wounded a gun shot wound to his thigh and was discharged from the Army on 4th March 1918, he was awarded a Silver War Badge No 351170.
This is a probable id as no CWGC or UKSWD record exists for a Sherwood Forester named Thomas Gardner. His date of death is unknown but as he was born J/F/M/1894 and discharged March 1918 he probably died aged 24.
