James Ernest Bonser was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of William an engine driver with Midland Railway and Mary Ann Bonser née Nash of 22 Clayton Street, Nottingham William was born in 1856 at Breedon, Leicestershire, Mary Ann Nash was born in 1865 at Darlaston, Staffordshire, they were married on 25th June 1894 at St Wilfred’s Church, Wilford, Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 22 Clayton Street, Nottingham, William 55 yrs ia an engine driver for the Midland Railway, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 46 yrs and their children, William 14 yrs a printers apprentice, Edith Gertie 17 yrs a lace mender, Ernest James 14 yrs a printers errand boy, Bernard Gladstone 12 yrs, Lilly Beatrice 9 yrs and William 7 yrs of age.

Military History

Lance Corporal James Ernest Bonser enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 15th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. His cwgc ref is 766621
