William Henry Weightman was born in 1880 in Newark and was the son of Henry a labourer and Jane Elizabeth Weightman née Swanwick. His father was born in 1851 in Newark and his mother Jane Swanwick was also born in 1851 in Newark, they were married in 1869 in Newark and had the following children, Elizabeth May b1875, Jessie b1878, William Henry b1880, and Joseph b1887 all the children were born in Newark. William Henry married his wife Frances Smart on 21st February 1901 in Newark , they went on to have two children , Frances Jane born 21st April 1905 in Newark and Arthur William born 1st May 1910 also at Newark, the family lived at 38 Newton Street, Newark. In the 1911 census William Henry is living at 137 Barnby Gate, Newark with his mother in law Jane Smart 65 yrs a widow a draper and postmistress, he is shown as being 31 yrs and a fish fryer, he is living with his wife Frances 31 yrs and their two children Frances Jane 5yrs and Arthur William 11 months.
Acting Bombardier William Henry Weightman enlisted on 10th December 1915 he gave his age as 35 yrs and 11 months, his address as 22 Harcourt Street, Newark, his next of kin was his wife Frances of the same address. He was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery, and on 23rd January 1917 he embarked form the Port of Southampton landing the following day at Le Harve, France joining the British Expeditionary Force. On 8th March 1917 he was promoted to acting bombardier. On 18th June 1917 he was admitted to hospital wounded, he was returned to England for treatment on the Hospital Ship 'St David'. Following treatment he returned to the Western Front on 26th October 1917. On 22nd December 1917 he was admitted to the 30th Casualty clearing station with Pneumonia from which he died on 13th January 1915 . He was buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France, grave reference III. G. 14
Article published 19th January 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Husband of Frances Weightman, 22 Harcourt Street, Newark. Born in Newark and educated at Christ Church School, afterwards being employed at the Devon Brewery. Eight years ago he left there to take up the business of a fish frier, with establishments in Barnbygate and Harcourt Street. Enlisted on Aug. 3rd, 1916 and first went out to France on Jan. 21st, 1917. Was wounded on June 18th and for five weeks in Norwich War Hospital. He re-joined his unit on Oct. 1st and returned to France on the 10th. Died in hospital of nephritis. Leaves a widow and two children; a daughter of 13 years and a son of eight.
