John was born at Arnold in 1886, the eldest son of Edward and Mary Stretch who lived at Portland Road Daybrook. He had 5 siblings including a younger brother Frederick (born in 1888) who died in 1918, when serving at the Depot with the Cameronians. In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Byron Street, however by this time Mary is a widow and John Is shown as being 24 years of age and a hosiery framework knitter.
He enlisted into the Army and joined the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. After completing his training period he was posted to their 1/5th Battalion. It was during an intermittent artillery barrages in the Ypres Salient that John was killed in action on the 6th January 1918, when aged 32 years.His name is commemorated at the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium
His younger brother Frederick also served and died in the 'Great War' Obituary published 28th January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- STRETCH. – Killed in action, January 6th, 1918, Pte. J. Stretch, K.O.Y.L.I., the dearly beloved son of Mary and the late Edward Stretch, Daybrook. Duty nobly done. – From his sorrowing mother, sisters, and brothers with the colours.” In memoriam published 6th January 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STRETCH. – In loving memory of Pte. J. Stretch, who was killed in action, January 6th, 1918. Ever in our thoughts. – Mother, Elsie, and George in France. “STRETCH. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. J. Stretch, of Daybrook, killed in action January 6th, 1918.
