Frederick lived at 27 Byron Street, Daybrook he was born at Arnold in 1888, the son of Edward and Mary Stretch, of Portland Road, Daybrook. Edward was born in 1844 and worked as a caretaker of a board school whilst Mary his wife was born in 1846. Frederick had four brothers and sisters, Elizabeth born 1874 Clara born 1879 , George born 1884 and John born 1887 (John was killed in action in January 1918). Frederick worked in the offices of the local 'Home Brewery' as a brewery clerk. In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Byron Street however Mary is by this time a widow .
He enlisted into the army and in November 1918 he was serving with the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and was based at their Depot. He had formerly served with the Royal Scots no 330774 and the Royal Scots Fusiliers as no 59694. He is reported to have died on the 16th November 1918, when aged 30 years, of Influenza. He did not see any action due to enlisting late in the war. He is buried at Arnold Redhill Cemetery
His elder brother John also served and died in the 'Great War'
