Arthur Rumley was born in 1892 in Wellow and was the son of the late William and Annie Rumley of Ollerton. Annie died in 1890 and Arthur and some of his siblings were placed in Southwell Workhouse. He was there on the 1891 and 1901 censuses. He later worked on a local farm, possibly placed by the Workhouse once he reached the age of 13/14. His next of kin was his sister, Agnes Crowder, nee Rumley, of 19 Wharf Road, Mansfield, she had been in the workhouse with him in 1901. In the 1911 census he is living at Lockwell Hill Farm, Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire and is shown as being a servant 21 yrs single and a waggoner on a farm, he is living with Henry Powell 35 yrs a waggoner and his family.
Private Arthur Rumley enlisted at Mansfield on 1st September 1914, he stood 5ft 3 inches tall. and gave his age as 22 yrs and 346 days, He was posted to the Leicestershire Regiment on 3rd October 1914. He embarked on 17th February 1916 from Devonport and disembarked at Basra on 31st March 1916. He joined the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment in the field on 3rd April 1916. He died of wounds on 7th April 1916 (severe gunshot wounds to legs) and died the same day at 16 Casualty Clearing Station, Mesopotamia. He is commemorated at Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
