Family History

Vivian Brough Burdell was born in 1899 in Nottingham and was the son of Walter a shop assistant and Ida Burdell née Brough , of 229 Ilkeston Road, Nottingham, His father Walter was born in 1878 in Nottingham and his mother Ida Brough was born in 1881 also in Nottingham, they went on to marry in 1898 , their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they had a further son Cecil born in 1910 in Eccles, Lancashire. In the 1911 census the family are living at 51 Watery Street, Sheffield and are shown as Walter 33 yrs a shop assistant in the boot trade, he is living with his wife Ida 30 yrs and their two children Vivian Brough 10 yrs a scholar and Cecil 1 yr.

Military History

Private Vivian Brough Burdell, enlisted at Derby and initially served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment with service number 88740, however he later transferred to the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He was wounded – a broken thigh – and taken prisoner on 9th April 1918. He died of those wounds in Germa hands on 4th June 1918. He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.
