Alfred Register was born in Sheffield in 1891 He was the fourth and youngest child of Thomas Register and Elizabeth Ellis. They resided at 13 Fowler Terrace, Brightside, Sheffield where Thomas earned his living as a railway goods guard employed by the Great Central Railway. They had three other children, all born in Sheffield, Annie born 1882, William Arthur in 1883 and Wilfred born 1888. By 1911 Thomas was still carrying out his railway duties and was joined by William on the Great Central Railway and Alfred as a porter. Records show that Alfred was living in Retford at the declaration of war. After his death, his parents were also resident in Retford at Leverton Road, the source coming from communication with the army records on October 1916
Although Alfred Register was a resident of Retford by 1914, he enlisted at Sheffield and was attested for short service on the 10th September 1914 and went to the Western Front on 21 July 1915. He was killed in action just 67 days later and as he has no known grave is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial in Belgium.
