John Oldfield was born in 1900 at Basford and was the son of Laurence a house painter and Grace Oldfield née Thorpe Morley of 6 Welington Square, Derby Road, Nottingham. His father Laurence was born in 1874 at Nottingham, his mother Grace Thorpe Morley was born in 1877 at Featherstone, Yorkshire, they were married in 1895 at Nottingham and went on to have 8 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Theresa b1895, Arthur b1898, John b1900, Laurence b1904, Grace b1906, Kate b1909, Clara b1910 and Maud Oldfield b1914 all the children were born in Nottingham. . In the 1911 census the family were living at 10 Hawarden Terrace, Hyson Green and were shown as Laurence 37 yrs a house painter, he is living with his wife Grace 34 yrs and their children, Arthur 13 yrs a painters assistant, John 11 yrs a scholar, Lawrence 7 yrs a scholar, Grace 5 yrs, Kate 2 yrs and Clara 11 months.
Private John Oldfield enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, he died of wounds on 18th September 1918 and is buried at Thilloy Road Cemetery Beaulencourt
His brother Private Arthur Oldfield, enlisted at Nottingham and served with 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was reported missing on 19th April 1918. (later confirmed killed in action) He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
