Thomas Tomlinson Kirk was born in 1893 at Selston, the son of John, a colliery deputy, and his first wife Eliza Kirk (née Tomlinson) of Kirkby in Ashfield. John was born in 1861 at Selston and Eliza Tomlinson was born in 1860 at Selston. Married in 1882, their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. They had three children: George b1893, Thomas b1893 and Edna b1895 who were all were born in Selston. Eliza died in 1895 aged 32 yrs. John remarried in 1897 to Harriett Breedon (born 1863 at Pinxton); their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district. They had five children: Gladys, John, Sarah, George and Edna Kirk. In 1911 they lived at 14 Mill Lane, Kirkby in Ashfield. Thomas Tomlinson Kirk married Mabel B Hooper in 1919; the marriage was recorded in the Maidenhead (Berkshire) registration district. They lived at 90 Vernon Road, Kirkby in Ashfield.

Military History

Private Thomas Tomlinson Kirk served with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He served in France from 1 February 1915. Thomas was discharged on 28th January 1919 with TB but died on 30th January 1921 from 'malignant malaria'. A number of servicemen who served in France contracted malaria. He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
