John Robert Metheringham was born in 1894 at Fishpool and was the son of Joh Thomas a colliery labourer and Frances Eliza Metheringham née Alcock of Chapel Lane, Fishpool. His father John Thomas was born in 1871 at Warsop and his mother Frances Eliza Alcock was born in 1874 at Fishpool, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born at Fishpool, William Tansley, b1893, John Robert b1894, Benjamin b1898, Joseph b1900, Peter b1904, Bertie b1905,Jessie Alcock b1909, Donald Ernest b1911 and Frances Louie b1915. In the 1911 census the family are living at Robin Hood Terrace, Fishpool and are shown as John Thomas 40 yrs a colliery labourer he is living with his wife Frances Eliza 37 yrs and their children John Robert 18 yrs a farm labourer, Benjamin 13 yrs a farm labourer, Joseph 11 yrs, Peter 7 yrs, Bertie 6 yrs, Jessie 2 yrs and Donald, less than a month old.
Private John Robert Metheringham enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters , he served with them at Gallipoli before being transferred to the Western Front. He was killed in action on 10th October 1918 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
His brother William Metheringham enlisted on 12th November 1914 at Mansfield, he was 22 yrs and 97days old, he was a miner living with his father John Thomas at Chapel Lane, Fishpool. He was posted as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery and joined them at Newhaven on 16th November 1914. He embarked for France on 2nd June 1915 where he served until 12th November 1915. On 16th November 1915 he embarked from Marseille, France disembarking at Salonika on 27th November 1915. He spent a period in hospital at Malta with malaria but eventually returned to Salonika where he served until 6th March 1919 when he was returned to the England for demobilisation. He was demobbed on 21st April 1919 to his address at Chapel Lane, Fishpool
