Family History

Arthur Maskery was born in 1890 in Cromford and was the son of John Maskery a stonemason and Annie Maskery nee Shelley. His father John was born in 1853 in Chelleston, Derbyshire and his mother Annie Shelley was born in 1853 in Cromford, they were married in 1873, their marriage was recorded in the Bakewell Registration District, they went on to have 3 children Sidney b1876 Cromford, Emma b1880 Cromford and Arthur b1890 Cromford. His father John Maskery died in 1891 aged 38 yrs his death was registered in the Bakewell Registration district. His widowed mother Annie Maskery then re marries in 1895 in Nottingham to Tom Watson b1856 Newark His step father Tom brought a number of children to their marriage all of whom were born in Nottingham, Thomas William b1882, Rosa Anna b1884, John Edward b1886, Charles b1888, Ethel b1892 and John b1894 . In the 1911 census the family are living at 36 Healey Street, Nottingham. Arthur married Florence Steele in 1910 in Nottingham In the 1911 census they are living at 5 Hartford Terrace, Hartford Street, Nottingham, Arthur Maskery is shown as being 21 yrs and a house painter , he is living with his wife Florry 20 yrs and his mother in law Margaret Steele, 60 yrs a widow. At the time of his death the family were living at 70 Duncombe Street, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Arthur Maskery, enlisted in Nottingham served with the 1/1st South Notts. Hussars. He landed in Egypt on 26th April 1915 and from their went to Gallipoli , he was killed in action on 22nd August 1915. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 25 Sept 1915: 'Pte A Maskery, South Notts Hussars, 70 Duncombe Street, Nottingham, killed in action, August 22nd, age 25.' Midland Railway websites list him as a Trooper, Notts Yeomanry South Notts Hussars. CWGC record and obituary give surname as 'Maskery'. The spelling of his surname on the Midland Railway Employees memorial, 'Maskrey', is incorrect.
