Family History

James was born in 1889 in Ecclesall Bierlow and was the son of Walter Jowett a saw maker and Agnes M Jowett. We first come across James in the 1891 census when he and his parents are living at 12 Preston St, Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield, James is 1 year of age. By the 1901 census the family have moved to 43 Boyton St, Heeley, Sheffield james is 11 years of age and he now has several sisters , Leonora, Agnes, Mona, and Ida.

Military History

James enlisted at Sheffield and must have been a regular soldier before the war because when war broke out he went straight to France on 12th August 1914 with his battalion 3rd Coldstream Guards. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916, he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.
