Walter William Hacking was born in 1895 at Nottingham the son of Walter Bruce a lace goods manufacturer and Elizabeth Alice Hacking née Phillips of 'Woodville' Beech Avenue and later 9 Herbert Road Sherwood Rise (both Nottingham).Walter Bruce was born in 1872 at Nottingham, Elizabeth Alice Phillips was born in 1866 at Birmingham, married in 1894 at Nottingham they had 2 further children, Frederick b1898 and Iris b19105. In 1911 the family are living at 11 Herbert Road, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham, Walter Bruce 39 yrs a lace goods manufacturer. Walter William married Amy Ethel Rayner (born 1896) on 8th May 1917 at St Andrews Church, Nottingham. they went on to have a child Loie Grindon Hacking born 19th July 1918.
Second Lieutenant Walter William Hacking originally attested on 9th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 20 yrs and 5 months his occupation was that of a manufacturing manager. His was posted to the reserves and mobilised on 11th March 1916 and posted to the 80th training reserve battalion with the service number 40882, promoted to Lance Corporal on 10th April 1916 and to Corporal on 22nd June 1916. He was discharged on 27th March 1917 to take up a temporary commission with the Sherwood Foresters regiment and was attached to 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters.He was reported missing on 21 March 1918 and later presumed killed on that date whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
