James Gouldin was born in 1893 and was the son of Thomas and Julia Gouldin nee Collins of 37 Zulu Road Basford Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1859 in Doncaster and his mother Julia Collins was born in 1863 in Hucknall , they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 11 children sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed in the 1901/1911 census were Thomas Alfred b1886 Hucknall, Emmeline b1889 Hucknal, Kate b1890 Hucknall, James b1893 Hucknall, George b1896 Hucknall, Henry b1898 Hucknall, Samuel b1900 Hucknall, John b1902 Shirebrook and Percy b1904 Shirebrook. In 1911 census the family are living at 37 Zulu Road, Basford and are shown as Thomas 52 yrs no occupation , he is living with his wife Julia 48 yrs and their children Emmerline 23 yrs a yarn slip winder, Kate 21 yrs a hose stamper, James 17 yrs a wheelwright, George 15 yrs a pony dirver underground, Henry 13 yrs a scholar, Samuel 11 yrs a scholar, John 9 yrs a scholar and Percy 7 yrs a scholar.
Private James Gouldin, enlisted at Dinnington, whilst he was living at Basford. He served with the 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st October 1917. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
His brother Private George Gouldin, served with the 2/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he was killed in action on 2nd December 1917. He is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval. Obituary published 19th October 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GOULDIN. – Killed by sniper on October 2nd, 1917, Signaller J. Gouldin. He sleeps besides his comrades in hallowed graves unknown, but his name is written in words of love, in the hearts he left at home. – From his sorrowing father, mother, brothers, and Hettie (niece). “GOULDIN. – Killed by sniper October 2nd, though trying to save a wounded comrade, Signaller James Gouldin. – A loving brother will be sadly missed by sister Kate. “GOULDIN. – Killed by sniper, October 2nd, 1917, Signaller Gouldin, Leicesters, aged 24. Some time we'll understand. – Sadly missed by his sorrowing fiancée Elsie.” In memoriam published 2nd October 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GOULDIN. – To the honoured remembrance of our dear son and brother, James Gouldin, aged 25, killed by sniper in France October 2nd, 1917. [sic] If affection could have saved him he would still have lived. – From a loving mother, father, and brother Sam (now serving in North Russia). “GOULDIN. – In affectionate remembrance of my dear brother Jim, killed in France October 2nd, 1917. Honoured in death. Fondly remembered. – Sister Kate. “GOULDIN. – In affectionate remembrance of Sig. Jim Gouldin, 8th Leicesters, fell in action October 2nd, 1917.
