Family History

Robert Mckee Devine was born in 1880 at Pendleton, and was the son of the late John a coal miner hewer and Sarah Devine née Mckee of 22 Ebenezer Street, Ilkeston. Both Roberts parents were born in Lanark, Scotland, his father John was born in 1853 and died in 1912 aged 59 yrs of age, and his mother Sarah Mckee was born in 1855, they were married in 1876 in Scotland and went on to have the following children, John b1876 Scotland, Janet b1878 Pendleton, Robert b1880 Pendleton, Agnes b1882 Notts, Sarah b1885 Notts, Elizabeth b1887 Notts, Grace b1890 Notts, Samuel b1892 Ilkeston and Mary b1895 at Ilkeston. In the 1911 census his parents are living at 22 Ebenezer Street, Ilkeston and are shown as John 57 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife 56 yrs and their children Samuel 19 yrs a coal miner hewer and Mary 15 yrs a lace mender. Robert married his wife Ellen Millington (born 8th January 1886 ) in 1904 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they live at 25 Field Drive, Model Village, Shirebrook, They went on to have the folowing children, Sarah born December 1905, Robert born June 1907, Eunice born December 1909, Ellen born November 1911 and Sybil born February 1914. Following his death his widow Ellen was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 22nd April 1918. His widow later remarried on 2nd February 1919 to James W Lambert.

Military History

Lance Corporal Robert Mckee Devine enlisted on 19th January 1915 at Mansfield. He served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th October 1917 having no known grave his name is commemortedon on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (Panel 99 to 102).

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser; 8 November 1917. 'Warsop Vale Soldier Killed. L/Cpl Robert Devine of Sherwood Foresters killed in action on 4 October 1917. Leaves a widow and 5 children.' A photograph was printed in the 22 November 1917 edition of the newspaper.
