Samuel Copson was born in 1886 at Southwell and was the son of Samuel a basket maker and Annie Copson née Lawson of West Gate Southwell His father was born in 1854 in Nottingham and his mother Annie Lawson was born in 1850 in Long Bennington, Lincolnshire , they were married in 1873, their marriage was recorded in the Radford Registration District, they went on to thave the following children, Zbiah b1876 Nottingham, Jabe b1879 Long Bennington, George b1882 Long Bennington, Emma b1884 Doncaster, Samuel b1886 Southwell, Richard b1887 Southwell and Mary b1890 Southwell. In the 1911 census Samuel has left the home address and has joined the Army he is shown as being at barracks in South Africa with the 1st battalion Scots Fusiliers Samuel Copson married his wife Ethel Birch in Nottingham in 1916, his widow later re married on 2nd November 1918 to Fred Marshall.
Private Samuel Copson, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers. He landed in France on 14th August 1914 and was killed in action on 3rd May 1917. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
