Family History

Herbert Peet Burman was born on 15th May 1896 at Ruddington, he was baptised on 19th February 1899 at St Peter’s Church, Ruddinton he was the son of Samuel a stud groom and Violet Burman née Peet of 5 Hazel Grove, Hucknall. Samuel was born in 1875 at Boston, Violet Peet was born in 1876 at Ruddington, they were married on 24th January 1898 at Staveley, Derbyshire, they went on to have 7 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 100 Southgate, Eckington, Sheffield, Samue 38 yrs is a stud groom, he is living with his wife Violet 35 yrs and 6 of their children including Herbert 15 yrs a groom.

Military History

Private Herbert Peet Burman enlisted at Chesterfield whilst residing at Hucknall and served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 20, during the attack on Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He is buried at Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers, France. Plot 2, Row E, Grave 5.
