Walter Brown

Walter Brown was born in 1898 at Hill Top, Eastwood and was the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and Sarah Elizabeth Brown, née Cooper of Hill Top Eastwood Nottinghamshire His father Thomas was born in 1869 at Belper, his mother Sarah Elizabeth Cooper was born in 1875 at Grinden, Warwickshire, they were married in 1896 their marriage was registered in the Basford, registration district, they had the following children, Walter b1898, John Thomas b1899 and Martha Hannah b1903 all were born at Hill Top In the 1911 census Walter is living with his siblings at Raglan Street, Hill Top Eastwood with his mothers, mother Frances Fanny Cooper and are shown as Frances Fanny Cooper 59 yrs a widow and seamstress, she is living with her grandchildren, Walter James Brown 14 yrs a butchers boy, John Thomas 12 yrs a scholar and Martha Hannah 8 yrs a scholar. Walter married his wife Betsy Bartlam (born 1898) in 1917 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 4 East View Terrace, Langley Mill, they had a son Walter Reginald born December 1918. His widow Betsy was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 12th May 1919.
