Family History

Ernest Brisland was born in 1894 at King's Caple, Herefordshire and was the son of Harry an estate carpenter and Annie Brisland, née Branston of Mount Pleasant, King's Caple, Herefordshire. His father Harry James was born in 1863 at King's Caple and his mother Mary Annie Hardy Branston was born in 1869 at Lowdham, they were married at Lowdham in 1869, they went on to have 6 children, all of whom were born in King's Caple, they were Ernest b1894, Robert b1897, William b1898, Lucy Ellen b1900, John Hardy b1903 and Francis b1908. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at King's Caple, Herefordshire In the 1911 census Ernest has left home and is living at Caythorpe with his grandfather John Branston 67 yrs a farmer and his two aunts Emma Branston 38 yrs and May Branston 31 yrs , he is 16 years of age and a farm hand

Military History

Driver Ernest Brisland initially attested on 9th December 1915 at Lowdham, he was 21 yrs of age and was living at Caythorpe and a farm labourer, he was posted to the reserves . On 11th March 1916 he was mobilised at Derby and posted to the 3rd Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, however he was discharged on 31st May 1916 under Kings Regulations 392 , unlikely to become an efficient soldier. It would appear that he suffered with a cleft palate and was unable to speak plainly as a result. As the war went on he was to join up and serve with 'C' Battery 92nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery and was to die of pneumonia on 2nd December 1918 at the 45th Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried at Awoingt British Cemetery, Nord, France. grave reference 4.D.1
