Joseph Beresford was born in 1893 the son of Joseph and Lizzie Beresford and the brother of Arthur, Doris and Clarice Beresford of 61, Huthwaite Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, In 1911 they lived on Huthwaite Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Joseph married Gertrude Allsop (b. 19th March 1893) in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district they lived at 89 Silk Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield. They had a daughter Olive Vera born 23rd July 1914. Following his death his widow Gertrude was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week for herself and her child; first payment made on 20th December 1915.
Joseph Beresford enlistied on 21st October 1914 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France with the battalion on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action six weeks later on 21st April 1915 while serving in the line at Kemmel, Belgium. He was buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium (grave ref. E.61).
