William Hunt was born in 1893 in Hucknall and was the son of Thomas, a colliery hewer, and his second wife Mary Ann Hunt née Wright. His father Thomas was born in 1844 in Ilkeston and his mother Mary Ann Wright was born in 1864 in Longton, Lancashire. They were married in 1893; the marriage was record in the Basford Registration District. In the 1911 census the family are living at 46 Linby Lane, Hucknall. and are shown as Thomas 67 yrs a colliery hewer but with an inability to work. He is living with his wife Mary 47 yrs and his children Thomas Henry a colliery hewer, Beatrice 23 yrs a shop assistant in a confectioners, Joseph 20 yrs a colliery loader and William 17 yrs a colliery loader. It is indicated on the census that the couple have been married for 17 yrs.
Private William Hunt enlisted at Doncaster and served with the 1/5th King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 25th May 1915 and is buried in White City Cemetery, Bois-Grenier, France (grave reference D19).
Six weeks after William's death his father Thomas died, reportedly of a broken heart. His sister Beatrice's husband, Albert Henry Gascoyne, died at Gallipoli on 16 September 1915 while serving with the South Notts. Hussars (Helles Memorial). See T2T ROH Gascoyne Albert Henry.
