He was the husband of Phoebe (née Green) Carlton whom he married in the 4th quarter of 1915. They lived at 79 Eastfield Side Sutton in Ashfield. He was the father of Sidney John Carlton (born August 1916) who died aged 16 months of bronchitis on 12th December 1917 at 42 Bow Street Rugeley Staffordshire.
7th Reserve Bn (Leeds Rifles ) Sidney was embodied into the 7th Territorial Battalion (Leeds Rifles ) West Yorkshire Regiment on 17th July 1915 . He was 39 years and ten months old and was working for Cammel Laird Ltd Sheffield as an electrician. Sidney had previously served in the Royal Field Artillery: whilst serving in India in 1908 he was injured in an accident with a gun team which resulted in injuries to his left chest for which he was treated at the Belgaum Hospital in India. Following this accident he was discharged from the army. After enlisting in 1915 he was promoted rapidly - on 10th August 1915 was promoted to Lance Corporal , on 11th August 1915 to Corporal and on 23rd August 1915 to Sergeant – master cook. He served on home service with the Territorials from 17th July 1915 until 28th April 1918 when he went to Ireland. On 1st December 1919 he was disembodied on demobilisation to his home address which was by then 21 Brook Street Sutton in Ashfield. He is buried in Sutton in Ashfield Cemetery.
