William Harold Berry was born in 1890 at West Bridgford, he was the son of Arthur an army pensioner and Blanche Marion Ramsay of 1 Thoroton Road, West Bridgford. Arthur was born in 1856 at Stanway, Gloucestershire, Blanche Marion Ramsay was born in 1867 at Strangford, Ireland. They were married c1886 and went on to have 12 children, sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Thoroton Road, West Bridgford Arthur 55 yrs is an army pensioner, he is living with his wife Blanche 44 yrs and their children, Percy 17 yrs an assistant groom, Eva 16 yrs, Aubrey 13 yrs, Gertrude 11 yrs Cyril 9 yrs and Winifred 6 yrs.
Private William Harold Berry, served with “C” Squadron 11th Hussars.William was killed in action on 24th May 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
West Bridgford Advertiser, 12 June 1915: ‘Distinguished Bridgford Family. Another unique record has been created by Sergt.-Major Berry of 1. Thoroton-road, West Bridgford, who has no fewer than six sons wearing His Majesty’s uniform – truly a proud distinction. Their names are Sergeant A Berry, 28; Corporal Harold Berry, 35; Private Herbert Berry, 37; Private Reginald Berry, 23 (all of the 11th Hussars); Percy Berry, 21; Aubrey Berry, 19, these two with Kitchener’s army. Sergt.-Major Berry spent 30 years (sic) serving twelve years in India with the 13th Hussars. He also for several years wore the uniform ot the South Notts. Hussars, and now acts as instructor at Messrs. Boots’ miniature rifle range.
