Family History

Arthur Frank Goodman (known as Frank) was born in 1880 at Leicester the son of John Goodman (born 1849 Rugby) and Mary Ann Robinson (born 1841 Hinckley). They were married in 1870 at Leicester. Arthur Frank married Ethel Gollick (born 1884) in 1905; the marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. They had the following children, Marion born October 1905, Arthur Frank born January 1910, John Ivan born August 1914 and Cecil born April 1917. In 1911 the family was living at 8 Morley Street, Kirkby in Ashfield. Frank was 31 yrs a house painter, and living with his wife Ethel 27 yrs and their children, Marion 5 yrs and Frank 1 year of age. John was born three years later and Cecil in 1917, the year beofre his parents' deaths. Ethel died aged 34 yrs. in July 1918, four months after her husband death, leaving their four young children orphaned. His pension record cards shows his children were awarded a motherless pension of 39 shillings and 2 pence a week which was given to the children's guardians. Marion and Arthur Frank's guardian was Mrs Annie Blyth of 44 Station Road, Kirkby in Ashfield. John's guardian was Fred Campbell of 4 Festus St, Kirkby in Ashfield, and Cecil's guardian was Mrs GA Hunt of Sprotsborough (pension record card)

Military History

Private Arthur Frank Goodman enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at East Kirkby. He was killed in action on 22nd March 1918 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France (Bay 5).
