Percy Lord

Percy was born in Melton Mowbray, the son of John Shaw Lord and his wife Arabella Sarah (nee Taylor). His father John Shaw Lord was born in Gonerby, Lincolnshire, and his mother Arabella Sarah Taylor in Hereford. They were married in 1885 (O/N/D Hereford) and had two sons, Percy b. 1886 (J/A/S Melton Mowbray) bap. 6 August 1886 Melton Mowbray parish church and Cyril b. 1890 (J/A/S Sleaford). In 1891 John, (28) a grocer and brewers manager, his wife, Arabella (27) and their two sons, Percy (4) and Cyril (u/1year), were living at South Gate, New Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Also in the household was John's brother, Brownlow Lord (living on own means) and a cousin, Agnes Dickinson. By 1901 the family was living at 57 High Street, Grantham, Lincolnshire. John was a wine and spirit merchant and grocer. Both his sons were at school. The family had moved to Nottingham by 1911 and was living at 85 Independent Street. John was now working as a brewer and malster (shopkeeper). Only he, his wife and youngest son, Cyril (20), a clerk for a lace manufacturer, were in the house on the night of the census. Percy was listed on the census as a visitor in the home of Charles John and Sarah Emma Marshall at Norman Street, Kimberley, Nottinghamshire. One of their daughters, Mabel (b. 17 February 1888), became his wife on 10th July 1912 when they were married at St Ann's Church Nottingham. They had one son, Frederick Marshall Lord, born 19 October 1915 (O/N/D Nottingham). The family was living at 92 Winchester Street, Sherwood, Nottingham, at the time Percy enlisted in 1915. However, the later CWGC [IWGC] record shows that Mabel was living at Bradley Hall, Bradley, Alton, Stoke-on-Trent, when the record was compiled. Mabel had a son, Geoffrey, in 1924 (A/M/J Nottingham/Marshall). In 1939 at the time the England & Wales Register was compiled she was living at 13 Cathcart Street, Nottingham, with her eldest son, Frederick, a grocer's packer. Frederick married Glenwyn D Walker in 1944 (O/N/D Nottingham). Mabel died at 13 Cathcart Street on 1 May 1947 aged 60. Percy's brother, Cyril, also served in the war. He enlisted in Derby on 11 December 1915 and transferred to the Army Reserve the following day. He was moblized on 10 April 1916 but reposted on 11 April. He was mobilized again the following year and posted on 8 June 1917 to the Sherwood Foresters but transferred to the Labour Corps on 30 June that year (286335 Private). However, he was discharged as permanently unfit and no longer physically fit for war serice (medical condition not attributed to war service) on 4 December 1917; he had served for 1 year 359 days. At the time he enlisted he was living at Vivian Villas, Standhill Road, Carlton, and named his wife, Ethel, as his next of kin. His intended residence on discharge from the army was at 10 Loughborough Terrace, Ryeland Crescent, Nottingham.
